iSailor is a relatively new navigation app with a stunning user interface and an extensive chart library, grouped into chart folios of TX-97 vector charts. Chart regions cover most popular cruising areas in the world and start at $4.99, with larger areas for $24.99. Running on either an iPhone or an iPad, iSailor supports route and track views, as well as all of the integrated information in a vector chart. Waypoints and routes can be imported and exported via GPX, though I found it difficult to place waypoints when constructing routes. iSailor allows you to add objects to your own downloaded charts, but lacks community markers and guidebooks. Overall, iSailor is an impressive new entry in the nav app space, and I look forward to its future releases. iPad App Price Drops Continued use of GPS running in the background can dramatically decrease battery life. Tides and Currents: Price Drop V 7.1 6 days ago Using WiFi Capable AIS Receiver: The other option is to have an AIS receiver that outputs a WiFi signal to be picked up by the iPad and used by the app to display AIS signals nearby. Apps with this option are: Navimatics, iNavX, I-Boating, Max Sea TZ, SEAiq, and SeaNav. The emergence of GPS-enabled smartphones and tablet devices has caused problems for GPS technology specialists like Garmin. Much like dedicated MP3 music players, many consumers now see little point investing in dedicated navigation systems when multi-tasking devices can provide a decent service. In early 2012, Garmin moved to counter the smartphone threat with the release of a navigation app of its own to complement its existing dedicated chartplotters. Photos: Some apps will allow photos taken with the iPad (or iPhone) to be tied to your track and will show an icon on the chart where the photo was taken. Click or tap on the photo icon and up comes the photo. Apps offering this: AquaMap, iNavX, Max Sea TZ, and SeaNav. Such a route with photos can be exported so others can see the photos and where they were taken if the app supports KML files.
